Gulf Cove United Methodist Church – Port, Charlotte, FL
Theme
Freedom, Spiritual Peace
Teaching Point
To remind students that, despite the struggles of life, there is freedom in Christ.
Opening Questions
Where do you go to unwind?
Where do you find your peace?
Do you find peace in staring at the ocean?
Maybe you find your calm in the quiet of the woods.
Discussion
Life can be surprising and completely unpredictable. Maybe you didn’t get accepted to the school you wanted. Maybe you didn’t get the grade you thought you deserved on a big school assignment. Maybe you feel like your family is falling apart – a sudden divorce, a sudden illness…
Let’s face it – life, sometimes, just stinks!
So, how you do deal with the stress of it all? Do you look for an escape? Maybe you run to the beach, find peace in the ocean waves. Maybe you simply shut yourself in your room to escape from the noise of the world around you.
Despite all the chaos around us, as Christians, we can take comfort in knowing that Christ has fought our battles for you. Because of Christ we have freedom, we can find peace. In Romans 8, Paul describes a life lived in the Spirit – a life of freedom. There is freedom and peace to be found in knowing, as Christians our struggles and trials are only temporary.
Paul promises us, in this chapter, of a future awaiting those who believe is Jesus – a future free of death and decay, a future of walking free as children of God.
Conclusion
In her latest song, Miley Cyrus sings of the freedom and peace she finds in walking along the sand, staring at the ocean with the one she loves. Imagine that same freedom, that same peace as promised by Jesus. “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid” (John 14: 27).
Jesus doesn’t promise us a life of ease, a life free of pain. But he does promise us freedom and peace in Him. Hold onto that promise as you find your ocean view of life.
