Opening Questions
Ever been through a breakup? (Feel free to share as much or as little information as you want.)
How did you feel when it happened?
Discussion
One time, when I was a freshman in high school, I broke up with my boyfriend of one month in a letter – that I made my friend deliver. It wasn’t my finest relationship moment.
Let’s face it, relationships are tricky – they’re hard work. It takes listening on both sides, open communication, shared interests and a lot of give and take. It takes vulnerability, a willingness to bare one’s soul to the other. It can take our whole lives the learn how to make relationships work, how to make them last. Sometimes, even then, we still don’t get it.
Even our relationship with God takes work, doesn’t it? We must work for continued closeness and intimacy. We pray regularly, read our Bibles (God’s love letter to us), and we worship every week.
But sometimes that just doesn’t feel like enough, does it. Sometimes God feels distant, almost nonexistent. So what do we do in those moments? Do we just give up?
No!
We have a God willing to seek us out – a Shepherd willing to leave the rest of the flock to find us (Luke 15: 3-9), to fight for us! We have a God who knows the deepest, most inner workings of our hearts (Psalm 139) and yet He wants us to bare our souls to Him.
Does that seem scary to you?
Conclusion
Think about it – we have a God willing to fight for us! We have a God who loves us so much, He was willing to die for us! I have a feeling, like in Shawn Mendes’ song, if God can’t have us…He doesn’t want anything else. I’d say that’s a love worth fighting for!
