Theme
Love (romantic)
Teaching Point
Love feels good – but be careful!
Opening Discussion
Who’s been in love? How did you feel? Head in the clouds? Butterflies in your
stomach? Happy/giddy all the time? Ever feel jealous when that person talked to someone else?
Discussion
Love is something that, sometimes, seems to hit us like lightning. We feel warm and fuzzy, or lit up with electricity when “that someone” walks in the room. Love feels good, doesn’t it!
The Bible is full of love stories! It’s all over Scripture. Perhaps the Song of Solomon is most notable for the sentiment! Solomon explodes with passion and love for his wife, his bride. He writes, “Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm; for love is as strong as death, its jealousy unyielding as the grave. It burns like blazing fire, like a mighty flame” (Song of Solomon 8:9).
As it’s noted here, love can lead to other emotions as well – jealousy, anger…
As Christians it is important to remember Christ’s love as we model that love toward others – whether it’s romantic love or not. As Paul notes in 1 Corinthians 13, “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails…” (1 Corinthians 13:4-8).
Conclusion
Romantic love is good! There’s no doubt about it! Love for others is a gift from God. The way we express that love though, is a reflection of God’s love for us and others. To keep our love healthy we must remember the love Christ has for us and use that as our model in our love for others. Never let your love turn
to jealousy or anger or envy. Love one another as Christ loves us!
