Song: “Wrecking Ball (Press On)”
Name: Sarah Taylor
Email: [email protected]
Theme
Endurance of faith
Objective
To encourage students that, despite the hurdles, running the race becomes easier as God runs the race
alongside us.
Warm Up
Pair students up for a three-legged race!
Have them run a three-legged race with no ropes holding them together. Then using one rope, tie them together at the ankles and have them race again. Do a third race with their legs tied at the ankles and knees.
Transition
So, was it easier to stay together with or without the rope?
Did the extra rope at the knee make it easier? Why or why not?
The Video
With that activity in mind, let’s watch this video from Building 429.
Transition
In this song Building 429 takes a look at life’s struggles and pressures. Sometimes things don’t go according to plan. Sometimes we think things should go one way and they go another and sometimes life just beats us down and knocks us out. Ever felt that way? How did you respond in your given situation?
Did you give up?
Bible Study
Philippians 3:10-14
How can we know Christ and the power of His resurrection?
What do you think Paul means in becoming like Christ in His sufferings?
What do you think it means to be a participant in Christ’s sufferings?
Have you ever felt like your sufferings are like those of Christ’s? Explain.
What is it that Christ has taken hold of for us?
How do we take hold of what Christ has for us?
1 Corinthians 9:24-27
Who’s a runner? Is it easier to run alone or with a buddy?
Do you think Paul is talking about a physical race here?
What else could he be talking about?
Ever felt like your life was a race you could never win?
How does it feel to run a race but never see the finish line?
Wrap Up
Like the song says, sometimes life is going to throw us a curveball. Sometimes we’re going to realize we just don’t have things figured out – maybe we’re farther from the finish line than we thought we were. But that doesn’t mean we quit running the race. That doesn’t mean we give up. Like Paul writes in his letter to the Philippians, we keep pressing on to reach our goal. And like he writes to the church in Corinth, we don’t run life’s race like a runner without a goal. We continue on, pursuing Christ and the victory He’s already won for us. With Christ – much like with the rope tied around your legs in the three-legged race – running becomes a little easier with each step. And sometimes, like the song says, it may not matter where the road takes us as long as Christ is running the race alongside us, we’re willing to go anywhere.
